for the romney campaign even if this is leaning to the right. >>chris: i would like to see, and i would have said this regardless of who the pollster was, i would like to see several polls because one can be an outlier and you want to see if there is a trend. you would expect it would close. romney had a very good night and he diffused a lot of the attacks that obama has been making against him for the last few months. things like he is out of touch and he is as concerned about the rich and does not care about the middle class or he is a right-wing extremist. mitt romney did not come off that way on wednesday night. i would expect it to close in the states. here is the point, if obama had a really goodnight and romney had a very bad night with the polls all showing "bomb with a big lead in the wing states, a lot people would say this race is over. that it has gotten out of hand for romney given the fact it was exactly the opposite, a big romney win, now it is a very competitive race and it ensures it will go on. it ensures it will be a tight, tough, competitive race right to election day. >>trace

york times" said right after the debate. romney had his share of lines and the stinctions he drew between romney care and obama care and didn't say anything about helping the uninsured. how do you respond to that? is it time for romney to give more specifics? is he having a problem with that? >> easy to criticize both of them for not giving enough specifics. romney has a 59-point economic plan that most people have never looked at. i would say that is probably too specific. i think mitt romney should focus on saying things like, mr. president, we are, you seem to have a problem with profits, which my company made. but most americans have a problem with deficits, which you've rung up four consecutive trillion dollar deficits. they both have a ltle problem with details. but there is a big, i would strike a big contrast if i was mitt romney. i would put a working state on one side and a welfare state on the other side and i would say america would be much, much better if dollars were earned instead of dollars awarded. it is time to stop rewarding our friends and punishing our enemies

caught on tape, some on the right said there was an amen moment and they were happy governor romney said it. now he says that the remarks were wrong. where do you stand? do you believe him now, or were you one of the ones that applauded the initial comment? >> i think you got to give him credit. he owned up to it and he apologized for it and took it back. i think he's right when you're on the campaign and making literally thousands of stops over the course of 18 months and two years, by the rule of statistics you say stuff that is wrong. look at what obama said in 2008 when he said people clinged to their guns and religious. that was offensive to tens of millions aacross the country. he tried to take it back. you have to give romney some credit for owning up to it and taking it back. >> some of the analysis is he admitted these remarks are wrong because he needs to move away from the far right. there were people like eric erickson who said that these remarks, the initial remarks were spot-on. he's completely moved aawway fr the remarks saying they were not just inartful but wrong. my spe

underwhelming performance in wednesday' debate. and bad news for mitt romney, and his conspiracy-minded supporters on the republican right. more on that in a moment. according to the bureau of labor statistics, unemployment dropped to 7.8% last month down .3 of a percent since august. employers added 114,000 new jobs. including 104 in the private sector and 10,000 in the public sector which had seen months of steady decline. in july's number revised to 181,000 with an additional 40,000 new jobs. president obama shared the news with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an abingdon, virginia, rally. >> romney: there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month
